Goodwin Elementary School, Old Saybrook

Green...
like a frog,
a Christmas tree,
the wind blowing through grass, leaves.

It sounds like the tapping of lizard toenails,
a leprechaun's voice,
a sweet granny falling,
a grasshopper.

It feels soft as snow,
hard as a turtle's shell,
slimy as seaweed.

If it could green would shake,
it would be a shamrock,
build a bird's nest,
help our environment.

Green!

by Mrs. Hayes 2nd grade class
Green like grass,
like an oak tree's leaves,
like bushes in the backyard,
like the sun when it's sick.

It sounds like the whistle of birds
and trains and teakettles.
It sounds like hummingbirds
and monsters.

If we could smell green
it would like Spring's perfume,
like fresh mown grass,
like frogs and mint.

It feel soft like swan feathers,
scaly like a fish,
smooth like kitten fur
or a crocodile's tooth,
puffy like a quilt,
like snow and fake grass.

If it could
green would go into outer space,
it would be the president,
it would take over the world.

Green..
like grass blowing,
like a palm tree,
a green-stemmed flower,
a prickly cactus,
the sea.

It would sound like
the ocean banging into a wall,
like a croaking frog,
a crackling leaf.

Green smells like pine needles,
a tree newborn,
like maple syrup on my pancakes.

It feels soft like a pillow,
pounding like the ocean,
smooth as a tablecloth.

If green could it would make people laugh,
it would play Tony Hawk,
it would make the Mardi Gras flag.

Green would write a poem!

If I Could

I would be a playful puppy,

a shark swimming madly

through the water,

the sound of a buffalo stampede,

a raptor roaring,

eating another dinosaur,

a monkey making loud noises in the forest,

a friendly puppy playing with her friends,

a cheetah running as fast as I can,

a king cobra hunting for food.

I would be loud

like a lion roaring.

I would be the sound

of a beautiful eagle soaring through the sky

looking for something to eat,

a kitten calling for help

up in a tree,

the sound

of an electric guitar,

a pencil tip breaking.

Paint me red

like an erupting volcano

with 1300 degrees Fahrenheit lava,

white like a cozy cloud

and a star twinkling

in the night,

green like grass in spring.

Or paint me the color peach

like the sunset in the sky

at the end of the day

by the shore.

Blue...
like the ocean or violets,
like bluebirds and balloons
flying in the sky overhead.

Blue would taste cold like ice,
salty like the sea,
like raspberry ice cream,
like mint,
like a breeze.

It sounds like waves crashing,
like a cold gust of wind from the north,
a balloon popping,
a bluebird whistling.

And it feels very cold like snow,
soft like blankets and puppies,
wet like a whale.

If it could
blue fly like the wind,
flood the land,
then save the world.

Blue!
