Free Write Starters 2

Remember, writers write!  A good way to start is with 'free writing'.  Just write.  Don't worry about it being a poem or other finished piece.  Just write.  Don't worry about spelling or penmanship or punctuation.  Just write for at least 20 minutes to a couple hours, whatever works for you.  When you are finished, set it aside for a day or 2.  When you go back to read it, you might 'find a poem'.  Here are some ideas to get you started (or not):
bullet

Look at an old family photograph.  What do think was happening?  Before the picture was taken?  After?  What are the people in the photo thinking?

bullet

Close your eyes and think back to a particular moment.  Describe this moment using all your senses.

bullet

Sit in a public place and describe the people walking by.  What do you think they are thinking about, what is on their minds, what type of a house do they go home to, what is their favorite food?

bullet

I know simple things...

bullet

Describe something you think is ugly as something beautiful.

bullet

Start every line of a poem with the same words (I wish, I used to, the day is, the sound of).

bullet

Create a poem that uses at least one of your senses in every line.

bullet

Write about something your body knows and your mind doesn't.

bullet

Write about a place you have visited, using all of your senses to describe it.

bullet

Rewrite a poem from another perspective or persona.

bullet

Rewrite a rhyming poem without the rhyme or a non-rhyming poem with rhyme.

bullet

Make a list of 10 things you enjoyed about yesterday, things that made you laugh, things that made you cry, things that made you think.

bullet
