If Only
Red
Could Talk
A Creative Journey for Young Writers
by Elizabeth Thomas |
As a teacher
using this book in the classroom, jump in anywhere. The book is in 6
sections. The first 4 may be taught as an introduction to poetry and
can be tailored to any grade. Using color, emotion, simile and each of
our 5 senses, these creative ideas have been successfully used in the
classroom again and again.
The next section of the book talks about the importance of editing and
revision, including an example.
The last part of the book lists ideas for where to go next - books to read,
websites to visit, contests to enter.
Have fun and remember - Poetry does not have to be difficult! |
| "Elizabeth Thomas has
put together a wonderful collection of creative ideas to inspire writers
from age 9 to 99. She knows the old secret - poetry must come from
the heart to be worth reading and writing."
Andrew Green-Editor, Potato Hill
Poetry
The
next best thing to having Elizabeth Thomas lead a workshop with your
students is to use If Only Red Could Talk. Her ideas lead young
writers through simple steps to create their own poetry. Ms Thomas’
tone is engaging and encouraging. In a non-threatening way, she also
demonstrates re-vision and ends with web sites where students can send
their work. This guide will help your students discover the poetry
within them.
