Callahan, FL

I was asked to visit West Nassau High School
as part of the Amelia Book Island Festival in early October 2007.
My thanks to the following 3 poets
for sharing their work.

Blue…
  by Derek

I would want to be blue

because it is absolutely

engulfed in beauty.

I would want to be blue

because it is so refreshing

and true to me.

My life is like a sadness at times

and then so great and adventurous,

like a rock

in the calm water,

like a spill

with no mess.

I would like to be the sound

of water because it is so graceful

and yet so calm,

like a rose in a patch of tulips,

like a great

and meaningful song.

The sound of birds’ wings flapping in the wind,

like God coming back for us

and as we take our vows

and then ascend,

like me taking my vows in life

and making my amends.

I would be a roaring lion,

so strong but also

very laid back.

King of the Jungle,

yet only

a cat.

Teeth sharp,

BIG heart,

going to hunt for my prey,

taking my time

because life is about patience

and I learned

that you can’t

take everything

in vain.

I Would Be

  by Adam

I would be black

like the night’s sky

the smoke out of the car’s muffler

like the darkness of a small alley

Black like a shadow

on a New York street night.

I would be LOUD

like an air horn

screaming

at the top of my lungs

LOUD like a monster truck

at monster jam every year.

I would want to be a bird

flying high and free

no worry

just the sound of air

and my flapping wings

upon the still clear sky.

My Cries are Worthless
  by Shea

My mother says do not cry
For there is nothing to cry about.
For when i cry it tells me everything might be alright
For my tears forever shall they fall.
While i'm here they shall always fall.
As they say the holocaust done this to me,
But really it's the people outside -
  The government,
  The state,
  The world.
  We have no faith.
  We cry for others,
  But mostly for the world,
  Who hates us so dearly...
