Writing Through Emotion

bullet 1st line of the poem (or the title) is an emotion

Happy, Sad, Crazy, Confused, Elated, etc.

bullet 2nd line of the poem describes this emotion as a color

Red like a stop sign, like a sunset, like a puppy's tongue, like the cherry on top of a hot fudge sundae

bullet 3rd line of poem starts with, “It happens when…”

Anger – ...when I am told to get up in the morning
Confusion – ...when I don’t do my homework and we have a test

Silly – ...when I drink soda too fast and it bubbles in my nose

bullet 4th line of poem starts with, “It sounds like…”

Anger - ...like the grand finale of the fireworks display
Sadness - ...a kitten left out in the rain

bullet 5th line of poem starts with, “and it smells like…”

Anger - ...burnt toast
Silly - ...rock candy

bullet Last line of the poem is the emotion again.

Here are some examples:

 Feliz...

Amarillo like the sun,
like daisies and sunflowers,
all the flowers in my garden,
like lemons.

Anaranjado like fresh picked oranges,
like a good peach.

It happens when it’s your birthday
or Christmas.
It happens when its summer
and school lets out.

It smells like chocolate ice cream
and tastes like
my grandmother's pollo y risotto.

Stress...
The color of mud

sticking to your feet,
slowing you down as you try to run.
It happens on Monday
and doesn’t stop until 3 on Friday.
It sounds like someone
who just ran a marathon
and is gasping for breath.
It smells like dirty socks
in the corner of my room.
Stress.

Loving...
Red like a dozen roses on Valentine’s Day.
It happens when you see
a beautiful girl
smiling at you
after a stressful day.
It sounds like the heartbeat
of a girl receiving a present
that was not expected.

It smells like the perfume

of a girl

after a warm hug.

Loving.

Sad...
Almost white
like trying to pretend you are content
when you are not.
It happens when you want something so bad
and just found out you cannot have it.
It sounds like an empty apartment.
It smells like dry leaves.
Sad.

Excited...
Multi-colored like a new box
of Crayola Crayons.
A rainbow after a storm.
It happens when you see a clown
or open a Christmas present
you’ve been waiting for…
forever,
waking up to Fruit Loops.
It sounds like a beating drum,
a block party,
firework finales.
It smells like fresh air,
brownies with chocolate chips
just out of the oven,
candy apples,
fresh flowers after the rain.
Excited.

Anxiety...
Red like blood
Light blue like ice
It happens when deadlines approach
when something new is about to happen.
It sounds like a fire truck during rush hour
and it smells like gasoline,
a musty attic,
a crowd of people.
Anxiety.
