Be yourself. Allow yourself
to learn something new each time you perform.
Ø
Know the first and last 10
words or sentence of your piece by heart.
Ø
Make eye contact when
possible or at least fake it.
Ø
Try NOT to be a tree, rooted
to the earth, but don’t move so much that it becomes distracting.
Ø
Speak loud enough so even
the person in the back row will hear you.
Ø
Enunciate!
Ø
Speak with conviction.
Ø
Be larger than the noise
around you.
Ø
In performance, when you
feel an impulse, yield!
Ø
Speak slowly. Do not rush.
Pace yourself.
Ø
When you use the space
around you, the space acquires an identity. Use it!
Ø
When space is limited, let
your eyes or hands create the geography.
Ø
Stand up straight.
Ø
If your hands seem to be a
problem, use them to help make your point or keep them by your side. Do not
put them in your pockets.
Ø
If you make a mistake, just
keep going. Often, no one will notice except you. If you stop and make a
big deal about it, everyone will notice.
Ø
When you are finished, don’t
speed up…and don’t rush off the stage.
Ø
It helps to hear your poem
or speech read by someone else.
